Acute Pain

What is Acute Pain , and How Do You Cure It?

Do you know exactly what is meant by the phrase " acute pain " and how it differs from other types of pain that doctors recognize? Did you even know that there were different types of pain that doctors treat?

What Is

In reality, the term acute pain refers to pain that is sudden and very sharp. It is high in intensity and comes on all of a sudden. It is also typically very temporary, although this may be cold comfort to the sufferer experiencing this pain. It's interesting that the word acute also typically refers to something very critical or crucial, such as when you hear talk of an acute shortage of something.

Acute pain is actually different from what doctors and healthcare professionals refer to as chronic pain. Chronic pain is something that is long-lasting or even permanent and is typically much less severe in nature, although this too can be cold comfort to those suffering from this constant discomfort.

However, acute pain and chronic pain are actually related in that, if the pain that is sharp and intense but temporary flares up again and again and is not treated properly, this may lead to chronic or permanent pain. Remember that pain is the body's way of signaling you that something is wrong, so when you have sharp pain and do not address the underlying cause of this, your injury or disease or medical condition can then deteriorate to the point where you have constant or chronic pain.

Treatment for Acute Pain

When considering treatment for acute pain , remember that pain happens in the brain, not at the source of the affliction. You may have a problem with arthritis in your knee, but it is really the nerve signals in your brain that tell you to feel pain. This is why many treatment options for acute pain are ones that actually work in the brain and not at the source of the pain itself. They cut off the brain's receptors to these pain signals or interfere with how it receives these signals.

There are other treatment options that do actually stop the signal at its source. For example, analgesics can cut down on swelling of certain areas so that there are no pain signals sent to the brain. Things such as acupuncture and massage may also relax the muscles and calm the nerves around an injured or affected area so that there are no signals of acute pain to be sent.

If you experience acute pain you do well to speak to your doctor about what treatment options are right for you. Leaving your occurrences of pain untreated can be even unhealthier in the long run.
